With the introduction of the Windows 7 operating system from Microsoft, Redmond has made a promise that this new operating system will be their safest ever. They have heard the complaints from consumers about the lack of safety in their previous systems and have decided to do something about it.
This improvement has come in the form of a new UAC control and an updated firewall. If you pay for the higher end versions of Windows 7, there is also a special encryption system called bitlocker that you can use to encrypt your hard drive. This is a great feature to have when you are on the move a lot with your laptop; in case it is stolen, your files and information will be protected.
Even with all of the new protections that are available with the operating system, you are going to have to use extra software that doesn’t come installed in the operating system. There are a couple of third party programs that will help you out with this.
Good antivirus software
The first thing that you are going to need to install on your system is a good anti virus program. Even though the new version of Windows is more secured than before, viruses and other types of malware still play a huge role in everyday computing. You will need third party software that will help eliminate this problem.
There are a good amount of anti virus programs that specialize in keeping track of new malware and eliminating it, some of them are better than others. Also, if budgetary concerns are a factor, there are good anti virus programs out there that are available at any price point. You can get a free anti virus client such as AVG or Microsoft’s own offering. Or you can get a premium solution such as McAffe and Norton.
Either way you are in good hands and they will keep you safe from both, current and future infections on your computer.
Anti malware and Anti spyware software
After you have solved the virus, trojan, and worm problem on your computer, you are going to need to solve the adware and spyware problem. These problems are for the most part not dangerous but they can be a real nuisance when it comes to peaceful computing.
This type of infection on your computer allows advertisers to track you and see what web sites you visit. There are a couple of programs that focus on removing these types of malware from your computer. One of the best software out there that accomplishes this is ad-aware. There is both a free and a paid version.
Either one will get the job done for 90% of your needs. For that other 10%, the paid version might be your solution.
